Debunking 3 Myths about Being in The Zone (aka "Flow")
Aug 12, 2021FLOW is that gorgeous state being "in the zone."
And we know about this state because a psychologist named Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi spent a lifetime researching "optimal experience."
Which is cool.
But--most of us don't feel that our day-to-day is an optimal experience.
How do you create flow?
In your real life?
First tip: DON'T google it and start learning ABOUT it.
Because "flow" has a definition and conditions that must be met--and then flow becomes this unreachable state. Like finding gold at the end of the rainbow.
Which is not helpful!
Because flow is a very natural state.
We can create in our bodies in just a few moments.
We can create a reality in which everything we do to be productive has a baseline sense of flow.
But first let's get rid of a few myths.
Myth 1: Flow is hard to achieve
Truth 1: Flow is not a mythical destination. It is something you can create
A recent client of mine got stars in her eyes when we talked about flow. That was my signal to move us instantly into the practice itself--because I didn't want her to fall into the invisible trap of "being in search of" flow. I wanted her to BECOME the flow that she always has available to her: by breathing and connected movement.
Myth 2: Flow is for others, not me
Truth 2--Practice is the key to flow
I learned this technique, which I call Breathing With The Spine, from Kathlyn Hendricks. She told us: "If you take nothing else from this workshop: Do this every day for a year. It will change your life." I took on the challenge. I practiced, modified, adapted, and now live it. She was right!
Every day, when I find myself struggling, I do a version of this practice, and my body automatically shifts into flow, often within seconds.
Myth 3--I need to work hard on my own
Reality 3--"It is not difficult to do this work alone. It is impossible."
When we embark on the journey of changing what used to work into what we need right now, we will encounter a lot of inner resistance. My teacher Russ Hudson often quotes his teacher: "It is not difficult to do this work alone. It is impossible."
So please don't try to do the impossible!
